Clark County’s Master Gardener Foundation this weekend will replant the “Welcome to Washington” sign that greets motorists on northbound Interstate 5 in Vancouver.

Volunteers plan to re-create the apple design that adorned the landscaped sign last year. And it will take a lot of flowers — begonias, specifically — to do it.

The apple itself is made up of 855 red and pink begonias, according to the master gardeners. It’s surrounded by 1,710 white ambassador greenleaf begonias, with kale also incorporated into the design.

The green outline, in the shape of Washington state, remains in place year-round. That’s boxwood, an evergreen shrub.

Volunteers will gather starting at 9 a.m. Saturday to plant the sign, according to the master gardeners. They’ll work in two shifts during the day, using flowers now being kept at 78th Street Heritage Farm.
