SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A bicyclist from Washington state has died after being struck by a pickup truck near Grand Ronde, Oregon.

The Statesman-Journal reports (http://is.gd/8lPqMf ) that 65-year-old Steven Y. Dayley of Washougal was pedaling on Highway 18 when he was struck by a car. Dayley was with people in the organized “Reach the Beach” bicycle ride, but police said he was not an official entrant. The ride begins at four different locations in the Willamette Valley, ending in Pacific City.

Oregon State Police said the truck’s driver, 24-year-old Fred M. Moore III, of Battleground, Wash., had veered to avoid oncoming traffic in the congested area when he struck Dayley.
