NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in North Bend say a former Marine has died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing at police and barricading himself inside a house.

The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports (http://is.gd/1qttXH ) police discovered the body of Danny Retallick early Monday with a rifle by his side. Officers entered the property more than an hour after deploying tear gas.

Police say the 27-year-old Retallick fired eight shots at officers late Sunday before locking himself inside his family’s home.

During the 10-hour standoff, his brother Mason told a reporter from The World that there were four dogs in the house, including Rottweilers, and a safe containing armor-piercing ammunition.

The dogs could be heard barking as a SWAT team descended upon the house yelling for the man to surrender.
