NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in North Bend say a man has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing at police.

The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports (http://is.gd/1qttXH ) that police discovered the body of 27-year-old Danny Retallick in the backyard of his family home early Monday — a rifle by his side. Officers waited 10 hours before entering the property and only did so after deploying tear gas.

But Retallick had been dead for hours.

Police say an officer went to the house after a report of shots fired. Retallick opened fire on the officer, piercing the patrol car with four rounds.

The man’s brother, Mason Retallick, says his brother was a gun enthusiast who returned to the family home three months ago after losing his welding job in Vancouver, Wash.
