SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Legislative officials have recommended eliminating 188 state jobs, most of them from middle management.

The recommendation of the Legislative Fiscal Office was developed based on the Legislature’s mandate earlier this year to permanently cut $28 million in state government spending. The Emergency Board is scheduled to vote on the plan on Wednesday.

Many of the 188 positions slated for elimination are currently vacant, so the number of layoffs will be smaller.

The recommendation would eliminate 40 jobs from the Department of Corrections, all but one of them currently filled. More than half are lieutenants stationed at prisons around Oregon.

The Department of Human Services would lose 63 positions, but the agency director says no layoffs are necessary.

Oregon State Police would cut four sergeants, one lieutenant and six other managers.
