OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna says Washington state’s multi-billion dollar transportation needs could ultimately require voter-approved taxes. But his Democratic counterpart, Jay Inslee, isn’t yet ready to support any specific financing plan.
McKenna, the state’s attorney general, says that “in the next couple of years” voters will need to consider a tax package to address the state’s transportation system. He tells The Associated Press that while it’s too early to know what any transportation package would look like, the state has always relied on voter-approved taxes to help preserve transportation infrastructure.
Inslee, a former congressman, wouldn’t say whether he would support sending voters a transportation tax package, saying that much of whatever decision was made would depend on the economy.
