Letter: Safety tips for driving in the fog

The Columbian
Published: November 27, 2012, 4:00pm

As I read the Nov. 23 Columbian story “Massive pileup kills 2 in Texas,” I wondered why not use this story as a teaching moment? Just a few suggestions about driving safe in heavy fog would be so helpful to drivers, whether at home driving to work or traveling on vacation.

I found these on the Internet:

  1. Keep your minimum safety gap to three seconds. Slow down.

  2. Turn on your fog lights and/or use low beams.

  3. If you leave the road, be sure to pull off completely. Turn off your driving lights and turn on your flashers so others know you’re there but won’t think you are driving on the road.

  4. Always use your defroster and windscreen wipers in foggy conditions to keep the windows clear.
