Letter: Neutral overlooked as solution

There is no such thing as an uncontrolled accelerating car. You see and hear about a vehicle that is speeding up and the driver cannot control the vehicle. A recent incident involved an SUV that had accelerated to 108 mph and the 911 operator was suggesting throwing the key out the window. Certainly that wouldn’t help.

The simple solution to the situation is to shift into neutral. Once you shift into neutral, the engine may race and even destroy itself but isn’t that a lot better than crashing into someone? I asked a number of people what they would do in such a situation and believe it or not, not one of them thought of shifting into neutral.
