Overweight dachshund to stay with caretaker — for now

For now, Obie the overweight dachshund will remain with the caretaker who has helped the formerly 70-pound pooch to shed 15 pounds so far.

However the custody battle isn’t over.

Obie’s former owner in Puyallup gave him up, saying he was unable to care for him.

The dog captured national attention as his new caretaker, Nora Vanatta, put him on a diet.

However, Oregon Dachshund Rescue wants to take Obie away from Vanatta, claiming that she’s exploiting the dog in her foster care and that he actually belongs to the rescue group.

A Washington County, Ore., Circuit Court judge decided Monday that Obie will stay with Vanatta, at least temporarily. The judge said it’s unclear who owns the dog.
