A Camas woman was injured when she drove her car into a ditch to avoid being hit by an oncoming big rig in Camas on Thursday afternoon, according to a memo from the Washington State Patrol.

The accident occurred about 1:32 p.m. when Eddie Winter, 35, of Vancouver, stopped his garbage truck along Highway 500 westbound at 10th Street. Milton Givens, 57, of Kalama, tried to pass the garbage truck in a semi with double trailers just as Laura Pinto Dingivan, 23, turned onto Highway 500 from 10th Street in her 2003 Ford Focus.

As Dingivan’s car went into the ditch, attempting to avoid the semi, the trailer tires hit the driver’s side of the Focus, and the tractor of the semi struck the garbage truck, according to the memo.

Dingivan was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and later released from the emergency room. She was cited for failing to yield, and Givens was charged with speeding.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating this incident.
