Morgan State rallies to beat N.C. A&T, 21-18

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Robert Council threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Andrew King with 10 seconds left to give Morgan State a 21-18 victory over North Carolina A&T on Thursday night in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Morgan State (2-2, 1-0) rallied after Mike Mayhew scored on 19- and 7-yard runs in a 3:09 span midway through the fourth quarter to help North Carolina A&T (2-2, 0-1) take an 18-14 lead.

Council was 14 of 29 for 251 yards, and had 10 carries for 59 yards. Kristian Johnson had four catches for 91 yards for the Bears, and King added three receptions for 55 yards.

Mayhew pulled the Aggies to 14-12 with 9:52 to go on the 19-yard run, and added the 7-yard scoring run with 6:43 left — capping a 23-yard drive set up by Chris Neal’s fumble recovery. Lewis Kindle failed to complete passes on 2-point conversions after both touchdowns.

Morgan State took a 14-6 lead early in the fourth quarter on Council’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. The Aggies opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on Dominique Drake’s 1-yard run, and the Bears took a 7-6 lead on Travis Davidson’s 45-yard run late in the second.

Mayhew finished with 105 yards rushing on 23 carries, and Kindle completed 14 of 25 passes for 166 yards with two interceptions.
