West, 17, wins 2nd straight USA Luge start crown

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Junior national team member Tucker West won his second straight men’s title at USA Luge’s start championships Thursday night.

The 17-year-old West had a two-run time of 5.756 seconds at USA Luge’s indoor start-ramp facility, 0.07 seconds better than Chris Mazdzer. Nick Gerardi took third place, 0.157 seconds back.

Julia Clukey won the women’s start title at 6.160, edging Kate Hansen (6.170) and former world champion Erin Hamlin (6.197).

In doubles, Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall (5.980) easily took the start crown, finishing 0.176 seconds faster than Shane Hook and Zachary Clark. Jacob Hyrns and Andrew Sherk were third.

The U.S. luge, bobsled and skeleton teams are scheduled to begin on-ice training in Lake Placid on Oct. 15.
