IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is asking the NCAA to put its athletics department on probation for two years after self-reporting dozens of improper recruiting calls and text messages by its coaches and administrators between 2008 and 2011.

The university disclosed the details Tuesday, saying it told the NCAA of the inadvertent violations in the fall of 2011. The university says it reviewed 750,000 calls and found 79 that violated NCAA rules. Coaches also failed to properly document 1,405 calls.

The school did not identify which coaches violated the rules and the review covered all 18 sports. The university says its coaches have served self-imposed sanctions for violations, including reduced recruiting visits and calls.

The NCAA can accept the recommendations or impose its own penalties.
