Letter: Shared bike-lane plan is flawed

The Columbian
Published: April 6, 2013, 5:00pm

The March 23 Cheers & Jeers included the Cheer, “Shared bike lanes deserve a chance,” but the editorial is a flaw in logic. Sharrows (shared-lane marking) will make MacArthur Boulevard a high-risk area. On multi-lane streets, sharrows are dangerous. Even more threatening, on MacArthur there are two schools. Sharrows in a school zone is a serious safety issue. Bikeability on MacArthur must also be aimed at school-aged cyclists. A dangerous experiment is never worth trying.

The editorial claims, “Cyclists are skeptical that cars and bikes can successfully share.” But “skeptic” is a total understatement–we’re troubled, and we’re trying to prevent accidents.
