LA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — Joe Torre says his experience as manager of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic has convinced him that the sport belongs in the Olympics.

Baseball has been out of the Olympics since 2008. Baseball and softball are making a consolidated effort to return to the Games in 2020.

Torre said Wednesday night in La Vista, Neb., that the success of the WBC reflects the popularity of baseball at the international level.

Torre is a Major League Baseball executive vice president. He was in the Omaha suburb of La Vista for a banquet celebrating the unveiling of a statue of his former St. Louis Cardinals teammate Bob Gibson.

Gibson is from Omaha. The statue is at Werner Park, the home stadium of the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers.
