OREGON CITY, Ore. — Authorities say an Oregon man practicing drawing and holstering his handgun for a job guarding armored vehicles fired a shot that killed a 9-year-old girl.

Police in Oregon City said the shot came from the house and struck the girl in the head as she was playing in the backyard.

An earlier Associated Press story that indicated the man was cleaning his gun when the incident occurred has since been corrected.

Police said they are investigating the shooting Monday as an accident but wouldn’t formally make a determination until their investigation is complete. They said no decision had been made about charges.

The girl was identified Monday as Shayla May Shonneker. Police said the man was 32-year-old Joseph Wolters, who lives at the home with the girl’s mother.

Police said he recently got a security job with an armored transport company and was preparing for a qualifying procedure.

Wolters, who is a decorated Iraq veteran, was arrested in 2007 after the U.S. Military mistakenly claimed Wolters was a deserter.
