LONDON (AP) — Trainer Mahmood al-Zarooni brought the anabolic steroids that led to his eight-year ban in his luggage from Dubai and never recorded in medical books that he administered them to horses at his Godolphin stables in Newmarket.
Those revelations, from hearing details released on Tuesday by the British Horseracing Authority, cast further doubt on al-Zarooni’s defense that he believed the steroids could be used when a horse was not racing and that he was simply trying to help sick horses.
Al-Zarooni admitted last week to giving anabolic steroids to 15 horses in one of the largest doping scandals to hit British horse racing.
Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, who heads Godolphin and is the ruler of Dubai, locked down his stables at Newmarket in response to the scandal.
