PORT ORCHARD — Kitsap County Coroner Greg Sandstrom has five portable baby cribs in his office he’s planning to give away in a national program to save infants from suffocation.

Sandstrom’s office has investigated 33 infant deaths since 2008 and he says many are caused by babies sleeping with heavy blankets and pillows or in beds with adults. He says babies are safer in a crib.

The Kitsap Sun reports Sandstrom is giving the cribs to needy families through the Cribs for Kids program.

He’s also providing information about how to put babies to sleep to reduce the risk of infant suffocation.
