Letter: Pearson Museum almost empty

Rob Smith of Seattle correctly wrote in his July 24 letter, “Fort’s history is a national treasure,” of the great work of archaeology students at the Fort Vancouver National Historic site. He then, however, went on to talk about Pearson Air Museum, which he said “is now open at the park with free admission,” and criticized U.S. Rep Jaime Herrera Beutler’s, R-Camas, legislation to resolve the Pearson issue as “a step backward, and not the responsible way to go.”

I wonder if Smith of Seattle has actually been to the “new” Pearson Museum, which is now under National Park Service control.

If he did visit the nearly empty museum, I’m sure he would find the canvas tent and ax that are proudly displayed by the park service in the cavernous air museum to be quite impressive.

The planes are gone, but they’ve got a real nice rusty old ax to show you.

Clark County has lost a treasure, and the park service seems to be dragging out talks in hopes that this problem will just go away. I am grateful that Herrera Beutler is doing something to resolve this issue.
