Letter: Allowing minors a sip is a bad idea

A new law that passed in the state of Washington is Senate Bill 5774, which allows students at least 18 years of age to taste and then spit out alcohol in certain classroom settings. This law was aimed at giving a boost to community and technical colleges with culinary or alcohol-technology degree programs. I was shocked to find that this law passed.

The young adults in our society already have a problem with drinking responsibly, and this new law only takes us further in the wrong direction. This new law only opens the door for more legislation to expand the use and availability of alcohol to minors. Who will actually be monitoring these minors to make certain they are not swallowing the alcohol?

As a mother of three young children, I am fearful for what laws like these mean for the future. I worry that our society is becoming too relaxed with alcohol laws. Already, a law was passed that allows alcohol tasting in grocery stores. Now we are providing alcohol to minors for a “sip and spit.” I cannot understand how this is a step in the right direction.
