Liberty upend Sun 74-66

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Plenette Pierson scored 18 points and the New York Liberty kept their playoff hopes alive with 74-66 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

Cappie Pondexter scored 14 points and Katie Smith added 13 for the Liberty (11-16), who moved within a game of Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Kelsey Griffin led Connecticut (7-19) with 22 points while Tina Charles had 18 and Renee Montgomery finished with 14.

The 19 losses set a franchise high for the Sun in a season.

New York led 55-44 with 2:03 left in the third period. Connecticut got within 55-52 early in the fourth period, but Pierson scored six straight points during a 12-5 run that clinched it.

New York led 42-35 at halftime. The Liberty shot 51 percent from the field and led by as many as 10 in the second period.

New York’s five reserves in the first half shot a combined 9 for 10 from the field. Its starters were 9 for 25.
