HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Steven Hicks ran for a touchdown and led a rushing attack that amassed 365 yards and Sam Houston State beat Houston Baptist 74-0 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Hicks rushed for 99 yards and was among four Sam Houston State running backs to gain more than 50 yards in the lopsided victory. The Bearkats running back had more yards than the entire Houston Baptist offense.

The Huskies were playing their first game in program history and have an abbreviated seven-game schedule. Houston Baptist will join the Southland Conference in 2014.

Sam Houston State’s Brian Bell completed just five passes but two of them were for touchdowns.

B.J. Kelly led the Huskies with 45 yards rushing as the Bearkats limited the Huskies to 90 yards of total offense.
