South Alabama fends off NAIA Dillard 82-73

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Augustine Rubit had a busy night with 21 points and 11 rebounds as South Alabama fended off Tyrone Williams and upset-minded NAIA Dillard 82-73 on Tuesday night.

Williams scored a career-high 35 points on 15-for-19 shooting as Dillard (3-2) battled the Jaguars (6-5) through 11 lead changes and four ties.

Williams hit a jumper at 10:54 of the second half, pushing Dillard into a 47-46 lead. But South Alabama outscored Williams 14-3 in the next three minutes, breaking to a 60-50 lead. Dionte Ferguson hit two free throws and a bucket, Barrington Stevens III a jumper and Rubit added two dunks and a jumper during the pivotal run. Mychal Ammons added 17 points.

Even then, the Bleu Devils never went away, lurking within five or six points. The Jaguars were aided by 28 Dillard fouls, converting 30 of 45 free throws, including 9 of 12 in the final 90 seconds.
