The Chieftains led much of the third-place game at the Bellarmine Prep Tournament in Tacoma, but lost the lead and just missed a shot in the closing seconds that would have put the game into overtime.

Joey Bean and Torey Jones scored 13 points each, and Nathan Hawthorne added 12 for the Chieftains (3-2). Jones was named to the all-touranment team, averaging 13 points a game during the event.

Columbia River coach David Long said that balanced scoring is typical of his team, which played a much better game than its semifinals loss Friday to tournament host Bellarmine Prep.

“It was a much better game tonight than it was last night,” Long said. “We had a shot at the end to tie it, and it just fell off the front of the rim. It was close. It was close the whole game.”

Long said a five-point third quarter hurt his team as a halftime lead turned into a tie after three periods, but the Bullpups only scored eight points themselves.

Gonzaga Prep made a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to claim an advantage, and was 9 of 11 from the free throw line for the game.
