Letter: Advocate for reasonable checks

The Columbian
Published: February 1, 2013, 4:00pm

Robert Wassman quotes a survey regarding guns and self-defense in his Jan. 18 letter, “Guns as self-defense save lives.” I have no doubt that all he says is correct. However, I wonder how many of those people protected themselves with automatic assault rifles.

I wonder how many of those honest, law-abiding gun owners would advocate background checks for all gun buyers so they themselves would be on a more level playing field. As I understand it, these are the proposals put forth by President Obama. I heard him say nothing about taking all guns from all people.

Perhaps we could begin to actually listen to each other and find solutions rather than attack each other.
