Letter: Modern Salem witch trials

The Columbian
Published: February 4, 2013, 4:00pm

The Jan. 31 Columbian online story reported, “Defense nominee Hagel defends his record in Senate.” What? Chuck Hagel doesn’t wish to, needlessly, extend the bloated girth of U.S. military might without a better cause than job creation or assisting congressional power mongering; and he doesn’t want our military to be an extension of the Israel military, or feel obligated to act on Israel’s behalf anytime it seeks or is in conflict?

Well then, by all means, get rid of this non-conformist wimp, this wretched anti-Semite. Anyone objecting to unnecessary war machinery, or being obligated to the distant holy land should be persecuted the way the Salem witches were.

Furthermore, defense secretary nominee Hagel shouldn’t refer to a “Jewish lobby” just because it is a Jewish lobby. He isn’t talking to anyone who can handle the truth; he is talking to a Congress that knows the truth but wouldn’t admit to it under waterboarding.

Hagel ought to know that this is not the Washington of “Mr. Smith,” where truth can cure corruption and pretension — this is the real alternative reality, not the way it ought to be.
