Catholic 7? How about those Catholic Cardinals?

WASHINGTON (AP) — While college basketball is abuzz about the so-called “Catholic 7” schools breaking away from the Big East, the Catholic Cardinals are trying to make some history.

The men’s and women’s teams at Catholic University were a combined 42-4 at the start of the week. That’s not bad for a Division III school that’s known less for sports and more for its rigorous academics, high-profile alumni and awe-inspiring basilica.

Basketball does have a strong legacy at the school, but there’s only one national championship banner hanging in the gym — won by the 2001 men’s team.

Both teams are gearing up for the Landmark Conference tournaments next week. Then comes the wait for NCAA tournament bids and the chance to give that one banner some company.
