LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The good news continues for Rachel Alexandra.
Her appetite is becoming more normal and the 2009 Horse of the Year is taking several short walks daily while improving from abdominal surgery.
The mare remains stable at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital a week after developing foaling complications from delivering a 140-pound filly on Feb. 12. Rachel Alexandra had a damaged section of small colon repaired the next day, but two abdominal lavages attached afterward have been removed.
A release from the hospital on Wednesday said that Rachel Alexandra still faces a long recovery. But veterinarians and owner Barbara Banke are encouraged by her improved strength, gastro-intestinal progress and “feisty” attitude that made her a champion.
