Rangers’ Berkman says calf strain is no issue

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Lance Berkman was going through a workout with the Texas Rangers when his right calf started bothering him.

The veteran first baseman said Wednesday that it’s nothing to worry about and that it’s not something that would keep him out of a game.

The Rangers say it’s a mild right calf strain and list him as day-to-day.

Berkman says he felt the calf Tuesday and that it’s likely the result of doing more in spring training, such as taking groundballs and running.

The 37-year-old designated hitter/first baseman spent his offseason in a rehab mode after playing only 32 games for St. Louis last season because of a strained left calf and two operations on his right knee.
