No reason for Texas stars Beltre, Berkman to hurry

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Adrian Beltre is feeling better than he did a week ago, and Lance Berkman is running bases.

Still, the Texas Rangers have no reason to rush the veteran players who have dealt with right calf issues early in an extended spring training. The regular season is still five weeks away.

Beltre said Saturday that the team wants him to take it slow and that there’s no reason to push anything yet. He says he could be playing by the end of next week.

The 37-year-old Berkman says he probably needs a full spring training after playing only 32 games last season in St. Louis because of two operations on his right knee. But with spring games starting so early he doesn’t feel like he’s lost any time yet.
