Benson, Dillard help Dayton hold off UAB 78-71

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Josh Benson scored 20 points and Kevin Dillard recorded a double-double to lead Dayton to a 78-71 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday night.

Dillard finished with 14 points and 10 assists for the Flyers (10-4). Vee Stanford scored 19 points and Devin Oliver added 11 points before fouling out of the game.

Dayton had a 16-point lead with 10:33 left to play before the Blazers went on an 8-1 run, capped by Rod Rucker’s free throws to trim Dayton’s lead to 62-57 with 5:30 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Khari Price pushed the Flyers lead to 72-61 with 1:23 left. UAB cut the deficit to five points again with 38 seconds left, but the Blazers pulled no closer as Dillard made six free throws down the stretch to help Dayton pull away.

Rucker scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for UAB (8-7). Isiah Jones added 17 points.
