Charlotte comes back to beat Rhode Island 58-50

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) — DeMario Mayfield came off the bench to score 17 points and Willie Clayton had 11 points and 13 rebounds as Charlotte defeated Rhode Island 58-50 Saturday.

The 49ers (14-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) used a 20-7 run to erase a seven-point deficit and lead 50-44 with 7 minutes remaining. Rhode Island (5-10, 0-2) had scored the first six points of the second half to go ahead 37-30.

Charlotte outrebounded the Rams 45-25 and held them to 26.9 percent shooting (7 of 26) in the second half after they shot 52.4 percent (11 of 21) in the opening 20 minutes.

Rhode Island took an early 13-5 lead and led 30-23 with 2:16 left in the first half, but the 49ers scored seven of the last eight points before halftime.

Chris Braswell had nine points and four steals for Charlotte.

Mike Powell scored 16 points and Andre Malone 13 for Rhode Island.
