Letter: Build a tunnel instead of a bridge

The Columbian
Published: January 18, 2013, 4:00pm

It is time to start planning a Columbia River Crossing tunnel rather than a bridge. Given the recent success of the Alaskan Way Viaduct tunnel project in Seattle, it is clear that it would solve the bridge height problem for both airplanes and river commerce, have a possibly much lower cost, and allow the continued use of the current I-5 bridge for as long as we want to minimize traffic disruption.

Plus, the Columbia River Tunnel was predicted in the 1971 book “Lathe of Heaven” written by Portland resident and famous author Ursula K. Le Guin.
