Schlierenzauer wins ski flying event in Norway

VIKERSUND, Norway (AP) — Gregor Schlierenzauer soared 240 meters in his second jump to win a ski flying event Saturday and tied the record for most ski jumping World Cup victories.

The Austrian was second behind Simon Ammann of Switzerland after the first round but had the longest jump of the day in the second to finish with 418.7 points. His 46th career World Cup victory tied Finnish great Matti Nykanen atop the all-time list.

Schlierenzauer couldn’t muster a perfect landing after his 240-meter leap, but his points total still held up after Ammann only managed 229.5 meters in the final jump of the day. The Swiss double Olympic champion finished just 0.5 points behind in second, while Robert Kranjec of Slovenia was third.

Schlierenzauer extended his lead in the overall World Cup standings.
