Jazz festival recognition goes to young local musicians

Local bands and musicians took awards at the 51st Annual Clark College Jazz Festival over the weekend.

Ridgefield High School Jazz I took first place in the A Division. Woodland High received recognition for being asked to perform Friday night.

Hockinson High School took first place in the AA Division.

Chief Umtuch Middle School from the Battle Ground school district received first place for middle school jazz ensembles.

Outstanding high school musician awards were presented to Micah Ritchie of Ridgefield High, Hannah Murray of Mountain View High and Aaron Garner of Hockinson High.

Outstanding middle school musician awards were presented to Laura Ahner of Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Lynnea Shapovalov of La Center Middle School.

Those awards also went to these musicians from Vancouver School of Arts and Academics: Nik Barber, Matt Carr, Dan Conway, Gabriel Pol, Lauren Hunh, Tyler Koford, Alec Jackson and Logan Whittington.

The awards also went to Briell King and Kristy Haagen of Hockinson Middle School.

Roosevelt High School I band of Seattle took the Dale Beacock Memorial Sweepstakes trophy.

Award winners were announced by Richard Inouye, director of bands at Clark College. He said the college will host the three-day 52nd jazz festival next winter.
