UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — The Utica Boilermaker Road Race is implementing stricter security measures.

In the wake of the April bombings at the Boston Marathon, Boilermaker organizers say there will be about 110 law enforcement officials from seven different agencies on duty for race day July 14. About 18,000 runners are expected to participate in the 15- and 5-kilometer runs. That’s about a 120 percent increase in law enforcement presence from past races, according to a Utica Police Department official.

Captain Wayne Manolescu says at a Monday press conference “this is probably the new normal.”

Last week, Atlanta police said nearly every section of the city’s Peachtree Road Race on Thursday will be watched by surveillance cameras and officers from multiple agencies.
