Letter: Negative impact greater than gain

The Columbian

Once again, coal companies are trying to put one over on us. A June 23 story reported, “Coal trains will cross Washington.” Saying that coal will be trafficked through the Pacific Northwest regardless of whether terminals get built constitutes a thin argument that does little to shore up crumbling numbers of supporters for these coal export proposals.

Recent polls show that support for coal exports in our region is dropping. Once people know the truth about the actual costs vs. negligible “benefits,” they are wise enough to see through the flimsy arguments being offered by coal companies whose sole agenda is profit, regardless of negative impacts that will be imposed on our communities should these proposals be approved.

We do not have to sacrifice the environment and the well-being of our communities just to satisfy the profit motive of a coal industry desperate to move relentlessly forward in spite of evidence that health and clean air and water impacts will adversely affect all of us should the coal industry get its way.

You can find out more about the coalition that is fighting to stop coal exports from jeopardizing the Pacific Northwest by going to http://www.powerpastcoal.org.
