Flat Out wins Belmont’s Suburban Handicap

NEW YORK (AP) — Flat Out took charge in midstretch, beating Last Gunfighter by 212 lengths Saturday for his second win in the $350,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

A 7-year-old trained by Bill Mott, Flat Out also took the 2011 renewal of the prestigious stakes run for the 127th time.

Flat Out, the even-money favorite, is 5 of 6 at Belmont, including the last two Jockey Club Gold Cups. He improved to 8 for 25 overall.

Jockey Junior Alvarado let Flat Out sit second while Percussion set the pace in the five-horse race. Flat Out pulled even with the leader midway on the turn before pulling clear in the lane. The time was 1:46.87 for the 1 1-8 miles.

Flat Out paid $4, $2.30 and $2.10. Last Gunfighter, the 7-5 second choice, returned $2.60 and $2.20 while Fast Falcon paid $3.50 to show.

Moreno was the wire to wire winner of the $200,000 Dwyer Stakes for 3-year-olds, paying $13.40 to win.
