KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sporting Kansas City is rewarding coach Peter Vermes with a contract extension through 2017 after he led the MLS club to back-to-back Eastern Conference titles.

The club was expected to announce the extension Tuesday.

Vermes played for the organization, then known as the Wizards, from 2000-02. He returned as the club’s technical director in 2006 and became interim coach three years later.

He’s overseen a dramatic resurgence over the past four seasons, one that has coincided with the renaming of the club as Sporting KC and the opening of a $200 million stadium.

Sporting KC is 10-5-6 and again sits atop the Eastern Conference.

Vermes was elected to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in April. He will coach his league’s team against Italian club AS Roma in next week’s MLS All-Star game hosted by Sporting KC.
