Hazardous materials by rail topic of Port of Vancouver meeting

The Port of Vancouver Board of Commissioners will convene a public workshop next week to learn about who’s responsible for handling hazardous materials by rail.

The meeting is in response to a plan by Tesoro Corporation and Savage Companies to launch a crude-oil operation at the port. The proposal requires regulatory approval and a lease deal OK’d by port commissioners.

The public workshop will be after the board’s regular public hearing at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at 3103 N.W. Lower River Road. The workshop will focus on rail operational issues, including the roles and responsibilities of agencies linked to the transport of hazardous materials.

Representatives of the Federal Rail Administration and BNSF Railway will be on hand to provide information to commissioners and to answer questions.
