PORTLAND — Oregon adopted a goal two years ago of sending 80 percent of high school graduates to college.

Data from the National Student Clearinghouse show that just 61 percent of the class of 2011 enrolled in a college or community college. Nationally, 68 percent of high school graduates enroll in college.

The Oregonian reports a total of 14,000 graduates in Oregon in 2011 didn’t try college.

Only one of Oregon’s 180 school districts reached the 80 percent goal. The Riverdale School District in Portland sent 86 percent of its 2011 grads to college.
