Letter: Republicans are not obstructionists

The Columbian
Published: June 9, 2013, 5:00pm

As pictured in the political cartoon by Mike Luckovich published on The Columbian’s June 6 Opinion page, this idea of painting Republicans as obstructionists is simply not true.

Republicans the last three years have proposed and passed in the U.S. House budgets leading ultimately to fiscal balance, without new taxes. The budgets nearly passed in the Senate, but were defeated by the Democratic majority.

Republicans passed the budgets with considerable political risk, yet in contrast, Democrats in the Senate have failed until last year to even propose a budget, much less pass one, in order to hide from political risk.

In fact, President Obama’s budget proposal last year did not receive even one vote from Senate Democrats — talk about obstruction.

Disagree with the Republicans if you will, but don’t call them obstructionists. It takes two to tango, with Democrats controlling both the White House and half of Congress. The burden ultimately falls on the president, as leader of his political party and of our country, to actually lead.
