ASCOT, England (AP) — Sky Lantern followed up her victory in the 1,000 Guineas by powering to victory Friday in the Coronation Stakes, the marquee race on the fourth day of Royal Ascot.
Richard Hughes ended his winless run at this week’s five-day meeting by producing a superb ride on the 9-2 joint favorite, who came from the back of the 17-horse field and stalked main rival Just The Judge before bursting clear to win by about four lengths.
Just The Judge slipped back to place third, with French horse Kenhope finishing second.
An emotional Hughes, who defied a tough draw in stall 16 of 17, said “she made them look slow, and they aren’t bad, I can tell you that.”
