INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — American record-holder Allison Schmitt scratched in the 400-meter freestyle prelims Friday morning at the U.S. national championships in Indianapolis and will not make next month’s world championship team.

Coach Bob Bowman said Schmitt would regroup after this meet ends Saturday before deciding what to do next. She struggled all week at the IUPUI Natatorium, the same venue where she helped the University of Georgia win the NCAA title two months ago. She failed to make the finals in the 100 and 200 free earlier this week. The only other event she was scheduled to swim was Friday’s 400 free.

Schmitt wasn’t the only notable scratch Friday. Ryan Lochte pulled out of the 100 backstroke prelims. Missy Franklin will chase another title Friday in the 100 free finals after qualifying second.
