EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — FIFA’s new anti-racism chief says soccer has failed to support abused players and needs tougher sanctions.

CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb has been appointed by FIFA President Sepp Blatter to head a task force and look into dealing with racism in the game.

European soccer has experienced a spate of abuse among players and fans in recent years.

Webb says “we’ve been talking for a long time in football and I don’t really think that we’ve supported the players. I don’t think we’ve necessarily put the right sanctions.”

Webb wants to hold talks with the victims of abuse and the abusers, including Chelsea’s John Terry and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. Both have served racism bans.
