PORTLAND — The father of a 5-year-old Portland boy who died of abuse pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The man, Kalman Eteuati, had been charged with murder by abuse in the death last June of his son, Mahonarye Noa. The man said the boy was fatally injured in a fall, but an autopsy showed battered-child syndrome.

The Oregonian reports the man’s wife who faced the same charge, Valisha Eteuati, is scheduled to enter a plea and be sentenced today in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

The couple has three other young children who have been taken into state custody.
