TORONTO (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed right-hander Pedro Strop on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back and recalled right-hander Steve Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk before Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays.
A key part of Baltimore’s bullpen during last year’s playoff season, when he went 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA in a career-high 70 games, Strop has struggled this year, going 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA in 22 games. He’s walked 14 batters in 17 2-3 innings.
The move is retroactive to May 24, meaning Strop is eligible to return June 8.
Johnson is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in one appearance with the Orioles this season. He went 4-0 with a 2.11 ERA in 12 games last year, including four starts.
