John D. Gray, the Portland developer and philanthropist who passed away in October 2012, left a $2 million gift to United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, which he supported for 63 years.

Gray was developer of Sunriver and Salishan resorts in Oregon and Skamania Lodge in Washington. He and his wife, Betty, were philanthropists in areas of the environment, education, affordable housing, community colleges and underserved young people.

The endowment will remain at United Way in perpetuity, with the interest used to sustain the organization’s work to lift children and families out of poverty. United Way of the Columbia-Willamette serves Clark County.
