HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — The greatest driver to never win a NASCAR championship is treating the season finale as if it’s the last race of his career.
Mark Martin has no plans to compete beyond Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
If he follows through, it will end a career that began with his 1981 Cup debut. He has won 40 races and finished second in the championship race five times.
Martin has said he’s done racing before, only to be lured back into the car. His partial schedule this year was even expanded when he agreed to drive 12 races as Tony Stewart’s injury replacement.
Now 54, he said he’s tired and ready to scale back.
But Stewart has big plans for him in a consulting role at Stewart-Haas Racing, so Martin isn’t going anywhere.
