UNIVERSITY PLACE — A developer says he’ll start mining gravel on property in suburban University Place unless planners give him the commercial zoning he wants.
Property owner Brian McGuire put up a sign on the parcel across the street from a Fred Meyer store saying “Mining…coming 2014.”
The News Tribune reports the zoning battle has been going on for years and some doubt that a commercial mining operation would be permitted on land bordered by residential neighborhoods.
McGuire wants commercial zoning but neighbors don’t want the traffic that a fast-food restaurant or coffee shop would bring.
The city council could make a decision by the end of the year.
